I really think they’re saying this so that they can come down to a (still too high) compromise.
At $130, it would make more sense for people to buy regular MetroCards than monthly ones, and it wouldn’t take long for them to figure that out. A monthly card is only good if you get more rides out of it than you need. A regular $130 card would get you 52 rides with the new fare of $2.50. But many people only use their cards 40-46 times a month (20-23 days) because they don’t use them as much on weekends. That’s dumb.
As it is now, a regular $89 card would only give you 39 rides, so having the monthly makes sense because you get more bang for your buck.
So yeah, this isn’t staying. They’ll likely throw this around for a while and then compromise at the $110 price they wanted in the first place when they went down to $89.
Either way, it doesn’t make much of a difference to me. I’ll still keep walking everywhere. Maybe I’ll beat my record of walking 120-something blocks a couple of weeks ago.
