So that Beatles book…

I’m finally getting around to finishing Here, There and Everywhere after taking a break for almost a month to read other things (though, why I stopped with only 40 pages to go is beyond me). I really like it! I don’t have others to compare it to really, but I LOVE reading about how the music itself was actually made.

My only annoyance is how he describes the Beatles. For starters, Cara’s warning that he’s a Paul-humper cannot be echoed enough. OMG, dude, please calm down, you love Paul, he’s the best person in the whole world, we get it. But if that wasn’t enough, he then rips apart all the other Beatles. Like, every chance he gets! Now that I’m getting to know why he doesn’t like Ringo, for example, I can see how his later interactions with them tarnishes his earlier memories. But, still. So. Damn. Annoying.

And even when he takes the time to give one of them a compliment, he always manages to squeeze in there some reminder of how not-awesome that person was. It’s as if he thinks that any mention of good traits in any non-Paul Beatle will somehow interfere with the balance of the universe.

The most annoying part was the passage in which he’s describing how John and Paul are opposites. In it, almost everything about Paul is positive and almost everything about John is negative. The only seemingly negative thing he says about Paul is that he doesn’t take criticism well, but even that statement is prefaced with the fact that he “usually knew exactly what he wanted.” Um. Okaaaaay.

But anywho, it’s really a great book, I swear. That just annoyed me to no end. But once you get used to it, it’s okay.
